Best Essential Oils for Anxiety and Stress

Over the last two years there has been a significant increase in the number of customers asking me for essential oil remedies to help alleviate symptoms of anxiety which can range from difficulty falling asleep to panic attacks.

As someone who uses essential oils to manage anxiety and low moods I can fully understand the frustration and the worry that dealing with anxiety can bring.

NOTE:

It’s important to remember that what I am suggesting is an alternative therapy and I am not qualified medical professional but I am sharing what I have used and what I know to be true about dealing with anxiety and essential oils are one of the ways that I help to manage my anxiety levels as well as a healthy diet, regular exercise and sleep!

Aromatherapy for Anxiety

To soothe anxiety we need oils that are going to provide comfort and are going to ground us and help us feel calmer.

Of course there are many different types of anxiety and it’s important to use oils that are not going to overstimulate us if say we are finding getting to sleep difficult or we tend to have a lot of nervous energy.

That’s why it’s important to consult a qualified Aromatherapist like mysefl before trying to treat yourself or anyone else.

If you are wanting to start using Essential Oils at home then my below recommendations are the safest and in my opinion most helpful oils that I have experience with.

Calming Essential Oils

My first recommendation is Ylang Ylang, a flower essential oil which is an INCREDIBLE oil for STRESS and ADRENAL FATIGUE!

It helps us to regulate our adrenaline production which can go into overdrive when we are stressed.

When our bodies don't get a chance to relax , rest and recover we produce too much adrenaline and too much cortisol which is the stress hormone. Over time this can lead to ADRENAL FATIGUE which feels like being exhausted ALL THE TIME!. Using Ylang Ylang will help to calm the nervous system and bring about a feeling of relaxation and calm.

HOW TO USE: Apply a drop to each of the adrenal glands located just above the kidneys or add to a massage oil and apply to feet or anywhere before starting the day and bed for restful sleep.

When we are OVERWHELMED it is hard for us to process new information or to even do simple tasks withouth breaking down ( I've been there!).

We need oils that are CALMING and SEDATIVE in nature.

One of my favourites is CEDARWOOD, a wonderful tree oil that can ASSIST US IN GROUNDING and CONNECTING to our roots/base chakra promoting a feeling of stability and safety.

When we are disconnected and ungrounded, feelings of fear can arise and can play havoc in our lives.

HOW TO USE: Apply Cedarwood to the soles of the feet to strengthen your connection to Mother Earth. Cedarwood is also a great oil for sleep which can be badly affected by anxiety so using this before bedtime on your feet or in an oil burner or diffuser will help you wind down for a deeper night’s sleep.

Finally I want to recommend Bergamot. a gorgeous Citrus oil also known as the 'little oil of stress'.

Bergamot is magical!

It UPLIFTS OUR SPIRITS due to its citrus properties but it is also a sedative oil! So it uplits and calms at the same time which is great if we are experiencing low moods.

Sometimes stress can manifest as lethargy and inability to be able to see joy in the world Bergamot helps with this.

HOW TO USE: Add 10-15 drops of Bergamot to a diffuser or oil burner to enjoy the aromatic benefits of the oil.
